| La arquitectura gótica valenciana nació en el segundo cuarto del siglo XIII, con inusitada fuerza, como un hecho colonial sobre territorio musulmán conquistado. Se desarrolló dentro del ámbito del gótico meridional en el siglo XIV y llegó a su madurez, en el siglo XV, con el gótico tardío. Durante el siglo XVI y la primera mitad del XVII algunas fórmulas constructivas de la arquitectura gótica pervivieron asociadas al gusto renacentista. La arquitectura gótica valenciana tuvo, por tanto, una peculiar evolución que, a pesar de su accidentado nacimiento, fue larga en el tiempo, diversa en sus intenciones e inevitablemente variada en sus formas. Una característica es común a la variada expresión de las arquitecturas del gótico valenciano: el desarrollo de sistemas constructivos y disposiciones arquitectónicas ya utilizadas por la arquitectura romana o, si se quiere, en términos más amplios, por las arquitecturas de los países ribereños del Mediterráneo en la antigüedad tardía. Sobre estas tradiciones genéricas actuaron las experiencias arquitectónicas venidas del norte francés. Éstas prestaron un nuevo orden basado en unas determinadas geometrías de la traza y de la composición arquitectónica y en originales sistemas de la organización de la obra, especialmente en los abovedamientos. El desconocimiento y, por tanto, escaso aprecio de estas arquitecturas ocultas ha debido influir en la falta de estudios rigurosos. Son muchos los edificios que carecen de una monografía o aquellos en los que su etapa medieval, de la que subsisten sus fábricas, se despacha en pocas líneas o con vaguedades. Falta -y ello es más grave- un corpus documental de la arquitectura gótica valenciana. |
Valencian Gothic architecture erupted into light in the second quarter of the thirteenth century as a consequence of the colonial domination over Muslim territory. It evolved within the realm of Southern Gothic amidst the fourteenth century and reached maturity in the fifteenth century with the arrival of Late Gothic. During the sixteenth century and first half of the seventeenth century some Gothic construction formulas persevered merging with Renaissance taste. Valencian Gothic architecture therefore presents a peculiar evolution which, despite of its troubled birth, continued over a long period, exhibiting a diversity of intentions and an inevitable variety of forms. One feature that the variety of expressions of Valencian Gothic architecture all share is the use of building methods and architectural plans that had already been used in Roman architecture or, in broader terms, in the architectures of late antiquity of the countries bathed by the Mediterranean. These common traditions were acted upon by the architectural experiments that originated in the north of France, which furnished a new order based on certain geometrical figures in the architectural plan and composition and on original structural organisation systems, particularly in the vaulting. Ignorance and, consequently, scant esteem for this hidden architecture must be one reason for the lack of systematic studies. Many buildings have no monograph devoted to them and in others the Medieval stage, from which the fabric survives, is despatched in a few lines or a few vague words. What is still more serious is that there is no corpus of documents on Valencian Gothic architecture. |
